iGA Istanbul Airport, Breathe into the Future on National Afforestation Day
iGA Istanbul Airport, which makes significant contributions to the development of the sustainability culture in Türkiye, held a sapling planting event on November 11, National Afforestation Day, in cooperation with the İyiliğe Uçanlar Association, to leave a greener world for future generations.
With the motto, "We are Growing our Future"
- iGA Istanbul Airport and the Istanbul Regional Directorate of Forestry completed the afforestation of a 50-hectare area of land in accordance with the Afforestation of 50 Hectares Protocol signed on October 11, 2018, and we carried out the three-year maintenance of this area.
- Within the context of the Afforestation Cooperation Protocol signed between iGA and the General Directorate of Forestry on July 18, 2019, we planned to afforest an area of 5,000 hectares within the five-year period between 2019-2023.
- The afforestation activities within the scope of the protocol were initiated in 2019. As of 2021, three million saplings were planted over an area of 3,000 hectares in the provinces of Çorum, Ankara, Istanbul, Kayseri, Konya, and Karaman.
- Today, iGA, which makes significant contributions to the development of the sustainability culture in Türkiye, implemented its afforestation project on November 11, National Afforestation Day, in cooperation with the İyiliğe Uçanlar Association, which was established by the crew of Turkish Airlines under the motto "We are Growing our Future."
- Taking into account studies conducted according to climatic and field conditions, mainly black pine and cedar, acacia, mahaleb cherry, maritime pine, calabrian pine, ash, white birch, almond, lavender, apricot, wild pear, hawthorn, thyme, oak, oleaster, common sage, walnut, and salt bush saplings were planted.
- Through a project started in 2018, and planned to be completed within eight years, we committed to carrying out afforestation activities over a vast area, corresponding to two-thirds the size of Istanbul Airport, with a total construction area of 76.5 square kilometers, with the aim of preventing an average of 70,000 tons of carbon emissions with approximately 10 million trees in total.
- In parallel with the "ACI Net Zero 2050" project first started by ACI in June 2019, iGA Istanbul Airport has joined 238 other airports that have committed to achieving "Net Zero CO2 emissions".
