Our Journey
Breaking new ground, breaking records, and overcoming impossibilities...
DiscoverWithin the scope of our accessibility practices, we aim to go beyond the standards, implementing more effective procedures at Istanbul Airport. Besides accessible and inclusive services, we also make unseen obstacles seen.
Istanbul Airport blazed a trail in aviation industry by receiving the World's "Biggest LEED Certified Building" title.
İGA Istanbul Airport upgraded to Level 3 in The Airport Carbon Accreditation Program. We have set our route in order to manage our emission sources and use the alternative energy sources. Our journey to be net zero by 2050 has begun!
Thanks to the ArtWist From Waste to Art Project, we create awareness on waste generation and upcycling and recycling, and provide social benefits to vulnerable groups with the profits obtained from the sales of the created artworks.
Supporting the movement of aircraft and vehicles in all weather conditions and traffic density, the Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS) provides the best integration for advanced situational awareness and operational control at iGA Istanbul Airport.
In line with the Water Management Policy, the ISO 14046 Water Footprint System, and the principles of the circular economy, we care about the efficient use of our water resources and conduct our operations within this scope. Our Water Management studies will add significant value to our sustainability outputs, setting an example to the world. From a sustainability perspective, we have created added value to our water efficiency and reduced our water footprint by recycling wastewater and reusing it throughout our different processes. With the work that we have done, our iGA Water Management System has met the Water Footprint Standard requirements, with our airport becoming the first airport in Türkiye to be awarded the Water Footprint certification.
Within the scope of our activities carried out in line with national and international standards, we support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and taking these principles as our guideline, we work with all our stakeholders to strive to leave a better world for future generations. At Istanbul Airport, we aim to become carbon neutral by 2050, and we continue to move forward following our sustainability principles in our practices since the beginning of our operatives. We review all operations, examine all proceedings, and take concrete steps towards our goal.
Our respect for the planet is prioritized in everything we do, and our sense of responsibility towards future generations shapes our practices.
We have published our 2024 Sustainability Report, reflecting our efforts in sustainability which are a significant component of our corporate culture and display our environmental, social and economic contributions in line with the Sustainable Development Objectives.
View Green LibraryOur carbon management activities are carried out in line with procedures adhering to the Standard 14064-1 Quantification and Reporting of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Removals at the Organization Level. As of December 2020, Istanbul Airport completed the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) Program of the ACI, successfully obtaining a carbon accreditation certificate and joining the list of climate-friendly airports. In 2022, as a result of the carbon footprint management and reduction activities conducted within the framework of its sustainability policies, iGA succeeded in raising its certificate from Level 1 to Level 3 within the scope of the same program. Furthermore, a 2050 Carbon Neutral roadmap has been created in line with the IPCC 1.50C goals. In addition to our energy efficiency activities, feasibility studies are being carried out for the installation and use of zero-emission technologies, as well as afforestation activities to create a carbon sink.
In line with the Energy Management Policy, the ISO 50001 Energy Management System has been installed and effective practices are being implemented to ensure conscious consumption and energy saving. In addition to carrying out system-based energy efficiency practices, the consumption of all systems is monitored to detect unusual activity and measures are taken when necessary. Thanks to the greenhouse gas management system which works in integration with the ISO 50001 Energy Management System, greenhouse gas emission sources are determined effectively and improvement activities are carried out on important energy consumption points. All systems are checked continuously through reviews, ensuring their performance.
As a result of our LEED Certificate application, one of the most important green building certifications in the field of sustainability, we received the LEED Gold for the Terminal Building and Ali Kuşçu Mosque and the LEED Certificate for the Control Tower and the Community Guesthouse.
We carry out relevant activities using a waste management system, designed according to our "Zero Waste" goal, a key approach supported and shared by all stakeholders. In this regard, minimizing waste is our priority, and we implement the process through the waste management system using separation at source and quadruple separation containers carrying out recycling activities using the semi-automated separation system built at Istanbul Airport. Within the scope of these practices, we have become the first airport to have received the Zero Waste Certificate in Türkiye.
When evaluated in terms of the water hinterland and water footprint effects, we hold a significant role as a stakeholder in the city of Istanbul. This means that every drop of water we use has an implication on regional water resources, extending far beyond the limits of our airport. Due to the negative effects of climate change, water resources are increasingly at risk with every passing day. We are aware that water is a vital and scarce resource. With this awareness, we conduct ISO 14046 Water Footprint Standard studies throughout iGA Istanbul Airport, with the aim of understanding and evaluating the extent and significance of the potential environmental impacts caused by our activities. We anticipate that the inability to feed water sources will be considered even more vital due to increased consumption and pollution, and that the Water Footprint Standard will evolve into the Zero Water Footprint concept in the near future.
As a first step in reducing our water footprint, we measure our water footprint, quantify water-related inputs and outputs, and use this as the basis for setting our targets. In order to reduce our water footprint, we conduct projects that consume less water, revise and renew our equipment and processes, investigate alternative water sources that are not currently in use, and recycle used water.
All the wastewater produced at iGA Istanbul Airport is recycled at the Wastewater Treatment Facility. All landscape areas at the airport are watered using treated water only. The water footprint of the iGA Istanbul Airport landscaping operations is zero. We are working hard to implement similar practices in our other operations.
Within the scope of the Biodiversity Action Plan, which we put into effect in 2015 to reduce our negative impact during the airport construction phase, we conduct studies to conserve and monitor habitats and species. Within the scope of our "Afforestation of 5,000 Hectares in 5 Years Project," initiated in 2019 jointly with the Regional Directorate of Forestry, extensive studies were conducted by academics and other related stakeholders regarding issues such as transferring turtles and rare bulbous plants outside the field, collecting and delivering endemic plant seeds to the plant gene bank, and monitoring winter populations. The studies carried out within the scope of this plan continue with the monitoring processes.
Furthermore, within the scope of the Wildlife Management Program developed in 2016 to ensure flight safety, comprehensive observations regarding wild animals and required field inspections, application and monitoring practices are conducted in cooperation with related parties.
Within the scope of our Social Investment Program, which is an essential component of our sustainability approach, we are committed to addressing disadvantaged groups via fast-acting and sustainable development projects. We aim to provide socio-economic benefits to vulnerable groups, to support entrepreneurship, to participate in activities that support agriculture and stock farming, to realize projects designed with back-and-forth recycling that contribute to the circular economy, to reach households in need through basic aid, to participate in sports, culture, and arts activities, and to participate in basic health care activities. We have always tried to contribute to services and prioritize stakeholder collaboration, and make every effort to demonstrate an approach of social responsibility in all of our projects and operations. You can find our social responsibility projects within this scope here.

At iGA Istanbul Airport, one of the largest meeting points in the world, bringing in art adds an aesthetic dimension to our commitment to pleasing large crowds of people. It is important for us to welcome passengers into an environment enhanced by the healing and calming power of art. In a fast paced world, where almost everything seeks a practical solution, we are committed to offering alternative solutions such as highlighting the importance of art, a much neglected area in our everyday lives, in the settings we create . In this context, and particularly for Turkish art and artists, we are leading the way in introducing various artworks to wide audiences. You can find the works exhibited under the iGART roof here.
