The Latvian airline, airBaltic , started its round-trip flights between iGA Istanbul Airport and Riga International Airport on Sunday 2 April. It was stated that the Istanbul-Riga flights would be operated four times a week, using Airbus A220-300-type aircraft. A reception was held at iGA Istanbul Airport to welcome airBaltic's first flight. Jevgenij Kozyrev, Sales Manager at airBaltic, attended the welcome reception to represent the company.
The direct flights between iGA Istanbul and Riga International Airports are expected to take approximately three hours. With its head office at Riga International Airport, airBaltic offers connections from Riga, Tallinn, Vilnius, and Tampere to various destinations on the airline's route network in Europe, Scandinavia, the Commonwealth of Independent States, and the Middle East, flying to over 70 destinations.
airBaltic CEO and President Martin Gauss stated, "We are pleased to have officially opened the summer season this year and to have launched the direct flights connecting beautiful Istanbul to our headquarters in Riga. We hope this new route will allow local travellers in Türkiye to visit our home in the Baltic States, explore Riga's rich history, and experience the vibrant art."
